Why Is High Fashion So Ugly Now?

Why Is High Fashion So Ugly Now?

With fashion month (or fashion week, or whatever the hell it’s called now) happening in New York City this week, I find myself asking one question over and over again: why is high fashion so ugly now? Sure, fashion used to be pretty ugly in the past, but at least you could make an argument that such ugliness came from being on the cutting edge of innovation.

Nowadays, ugly clothes are just ugly clothes. No more excuses. We know how to make things look good, why aren’t we doing it?

Trends Change Styles

Fashion is a subjective topic and trends change styles, but there are some undeniable truths in the industry. The thing to remember about fashion is that it’s all about the perspective you take; fashion is in the eye of the beholder. When people why is fashion so ugly they might be thinking about how different fashion was when they were young or what was popular back then.

Fashion always evolves and changes with time so what may have been popular back times ago may not be popular now. Different cultures also dictate what is seen as fashionable. What makes high fashion ugly to one person could make it fashionable to another, which brings us to the subjectivity of this topic.

Retouching Has Changed Our Understanding of Beauty

In the past, fashion magazines would retouch photos to make people look as though they had flawless skin. These days, however, we are seeing more images that show real skin flaws and all. This change in perception is partly due to the prevalence of social media; people are accustomed to seeing themselves and others in a non-retouched state.

Additionally, Instagrammers have made it a point to post their unedited selfies on their profiles in order to promote self-love. But what does this mean for the future of high fashion?

Social Media Influences What We Wear

There is a growing trend of people in the fashion industry following social media trends to decide what they should be producing. On Instagram, followers and likes are valued over talent. As a result, many designers are learning how to make clothes that will generate an enthusiastic response on social media instead of creating garments that may be more beautiful or better designed but don’t get as many likes.

It’s also worth noting that while the internet has had positive impacts on the fashion industry by making it easier for indie designers to market their work and for consumers to find new brands more easily, it can also have negative effects on creativity.

Beauty is Not Always Pretty

You might be wondering why is high fashion so ugly now? There are a number of reasons: high fashion doesn’t always need to be pretty; sometimes the subject matter they are creating art around dictates a certain style; and it’s not always about beauty in our society.

Fashion used to be all about creating pretty dresses and clothing, while today high fashion designers often use graphic images or gory scenes as the inspiration for their work. The graphic art can make the design look very flat and unappealing, which is why I would recommend some research into what is current in the industry before blindly buying a piece of clothing without knowing who designed it.

Beautiful Doesn’t Always Mean Good Quality

It seems that the fashion industry has come to a point where the focus is on making clothing from low quality materials, which often results in garments that look cheap. Designers and buyers are also looking for less expensive fabrics and developing more exclusive products, which creates an artificial demand that pushes prices up.

This leaves consumers with a choice: they can buy something of high quality but at a higher cost, or buy something of lower quality but at a lower cost. Some designers have found ways to work around this problem by using recycled fabric or collaborating with other designers or brands to create unique pieces that are made of high-quality materials but are still affordable.

Conclusion

Fashion is about change. Trends are always evolving. But high fashion as we know it has become stagnant and not as exciting to people anymore.

It’s hard to stay innovative in the industry with all of the competition now, but it’s also difficult to maintain what was once groundbreaking and innovative when everything is constantly changing and adapting.

For example, designer Rei Kawakubo invented a whole new way of thinking about clothes, what they should look like, how they should feel, how they should work for you–how they could be something new every day.
